Mumbai: On Friday, according to the report, Boxing legend Mary Kom has stepped down as chef-de-mission of India for the upcoming Olympics 2024 in Paris, citing personal reasons. After stepping down as India’s chef-de-mission for Olympics, Mary Kom said, “Embarrassing to retreat from a commitment, but I am left with no choice,” .

Kom had asked to be relieved from her position in a letter addressed to Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha. Kom was appointed as the chef-de-mission in March of this year by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) feeling that she was a natural choice to guide and mentor the athletes at the event in Paris.

In a letter to Ush, 41-year-old stated,”I consider it an honour to serve my country in every way possible, and I was mentally prepared for it. However, I regret that I will not be able to uphold the prestigious responsibility and would like to resign, owing to personal reasons.”

She added, “It is embarrassing to retreat from a commitment, which I seldom do, but I am left with no choice. I am there to cheer on my country and the athletes competing in this Olympic Games, with great expectations.”

According to information, 2012 London Olympics bronze medallist Mary Kom was to handle the logistics of the Indian contingent at the Paris Olympics scheduled from July 26 to August 11.

In a statement, Usha said, “We are saddened that Olympic medallist boxer and IOA Athletes Commission Chairperson Mary Kom has stepped down citing personal reasons. We respect her decision and her privacy.” She also said,”I will do due consultations and will soon announce Mary Kom’s replacement.”

Usha also said,”I completely understand her request and respect her decision. I have also conveyed to her that she will always have my own support and that of IOA. I also request everyone to respect the legendary boxer’s privacy.”
