Bus strike across Punjab affects commuters’ movements at various places in state

The people of Punjab have been facing inconvenience at several locations on Saturday, as a result of a strike organised by contract workers of a government transport undertaking in an effort to demand a number of things.

Chandigarh: The people of Punjab have been facing inconvenience at several locations on Saturday, as a result of a strike organised by contract workers of a government transport undertaking in an effort to demand a number of things. Over 2,000 buses from the government’s undertaking PUNBUS, were allegedly taken off the road at several bus depots during the statewide protest.

A large number of passengers have been badly affected by the strike in several cities, including Ludhiana, Moga, Amritsar, and Ferozepur.

Some travellers claimed they had to choose private buses or cabs to get where they needed to go.

The employees are opposing the outsourcing of 28 posts of drivers. Their requests include the cancellation of recruitment through outsourcing and the formation of a stronger hiring policy.

An employee union leader in Ludhiana said the next course of action on the strike will be taken after a scheduled meeting in Chandigarh on Monday.

The vice president of the protesting employees’ union, Jodh Singh, said in Amritsar that buses would not move from depots until their demands were fulfilled.

He said several demands are pending, including the immediate payment of the promised five percent hike to temporary workers.
