In view of the Lok Sabha elections to be held next year, the Modi government has extended the tenure of the cabinet secretary by one more year. Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba has been given one year extension till next year. He will remain on this post till 2024 elections. Gaba is still on service expansion only. The post of cabinet secretary is considered to be the most important among the bureaucrats.It is the cabinet secretary who works to establish coordination between the PM and the ministers.
Got service extension twice before
The Modi government made Gauba the cabinet secretary of India in the year 2019. Gauba has got extension on this post twice earlier also. His fixed tenure of two years was to end on June 30, 2021. The ACC granted an extension of one year to Bhalla on August 12, 2021, beyond his fixed tenure of two years, which was to end on August 22 the same year. Prior to this, Gauba was also the Home Secretary of India. Under his leadership, a draft was made to remove Article-370 from Jammu and Kashmir.
The notification issued by the government states that the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has relaxed AIS (DCRB) Rules, 1958 and Rule 56 (d) of the Fundamental Rules for a period of one year beyond 30.08.2023. Cabinet has approved extension in service of Rajeev Gauba, IAS (JH:82) as Secretary.
