Canada: Indian couple, 3-month-old grandson killed in multi-vehicle collision after police chase in Ontario

Toronto: An Indian couple and their three-month-old grandson were among the four people died in Ontario province of Canada in a multi-vehicle collision. According to the information, Police were chasing a liquor store robbery suspect who was driving in the wrong direction.

Police said that all four deceased were pronounced dead at the scene on Highway 401 in Whitby, about 50 km east of Toronto. In a statement, Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said on Thursday that two of the victims, a 60-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman, came from India.

The infant’s parents, a 33-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman were injured in the crash, the SIU added. The robbery suspect also died in the collision, which involved at least six vehicles.

Authorities have said the deadly car chase began with a robbery at a liquor store in Bowmanville and ended about 20 minutes later when the suspect in a cargo van led Durham police on a high-speed pursuit against opposite traffic on Highway 401. A 38-year-old male passenger from the cargo van was also taken to hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Autopsies were performed on all of the victims in Toronto on Wednesday. Seven investigators, a forensic investigator and a collision reconstructionist are continuing to investigate the case, the statement said. The SIU is an agency that is called in to investigate whenever police are involved in a death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
