New Delhi: In the big breaking development, Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal has now been sent to judicial custody. Earlier, on September 1, Naresh Goyal was arrested by ED after hours of grilling under PMLA act. However, today, he has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days by the PMLA court of Mumbai in the Rs 538 crore bank scam.
The court sent Goyal to judicial custody as the investigating agency did not give the remand. A money laundering case has been registered on the FIR of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) against bankrupt private aviation company founder Goyal, his wife Anita and some former officials of the company in connection with the alleged fraud of Rs 538 crore from Canara Bank.
The bank in its complaint alleged that it had permitted a loan of Rs 848.86 crore to Jet Airways (India) Ltd, of which Rs 538.62 crore is outstanding. CBI had registered an FIR on the complaint of the bank.
The 74-year-old businessman was produced before the special PMLA court at the end of his initial remand on Thursday. Goyal was sent to judicial custody by the court as no further remand was sought by the probe agency.
Earlier, in May 2023, 74-year-old Goyal was arrested by the ED based on an FIR registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) earlier in May this year. Jet Airways (India) Limited, Naresh Goyal, his wife Anita Naresh Goyal, Gaurang Ananda Shetty and unknown Public Servant(s) and Private Person(s) were named as accused in the FIR.
What is the whole case against Naresh Goyal?
This money laundering case is based on the FIR of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The CBI had filed an FIR against defunct airline Jet Airways, Goyal, his wife and some former officials of the airline in connection with the alleged fraud of Rs 538 crore with Canara Bank.
This FIR was registered on the complaint of Canara Bank. The bank has said that it had given a loan of Rs 848.86 crore to Jet Airways, of which Rs 538.62 crore is outstanding.
