New Delhi: The Center on Sunday filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court opposing the legal recognition of same-sex marriage. The Center told the country’s top court that same-sex relationships and heterosexual relationships are clearly separate categories that cannot be treated as the same.

In fact, the Supreme Court heard the petitions requesting legal recognition of same-sex marriage on Monday. During the hearing, the central government opposed the petition seeking recognition of same-sex marriage in the Supreme Court. The case was heard by Chief Justice D. Y. Chandrachud, Justice P. S. Narasimha and Justice J. B. Pardiwala.

The top court, on January 6, had transferred all such petitions pending before various high courts, including the Delhi High Court, to the club and itself.

It had said that the counsel appearing for the Center and advocate Arundhati Katju, representing the petitioners, would together prepare a common compilation of written submissions, documents and precedents which would be relied upon during the hearing.

The bench, in its January 6 order, had said, “Soft copies of the compilations shall be exchanged between the parties and made available to the court.” List the petition along with related petitions and transferred matters on 13 th March, 2023 for reference.
