New Delhi: The Union government has cleared the air to provide free rations to 81.35 crore poor people under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) for one year. According to government authorities, the decision will cost the government’s reserves almost Rs 2 lakh crore.

The beneficiaries of the NFSA Act currently pay between Rs 1 and Rs 3 per kg. According to the Act, food grain is distributed at heavily subsidised prices of Rs 1, Rs 2, and Rs 3 per kg for coarse cereals, wheat, and rice and is allocated at 5 kg per person per month for priority households and 35 kg per family per month for Antodaya Anna Yojna (AAY) families. However, the recipients of the scheme will receive a free ration from the government in 2023. The Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) is set to expire on December 31, 2022, just days after the decision is made.

During the COVID pandemic in 2020, the PMGKAY was introduced, and the Center supplied 5 kg of food grain free of cost to people falling under the NFSA quota.

However, the Centre has decided to merge the PMGKAY scheme with the NFSA.

Food Minister Piyush Goyal recently stated in parliament that the government has allocated nearly 1,118 lakh tonnes of foodgrains to states and UTs under the PMGKAY (total allocation from Phase I to Phase VII).
