Chennai: The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has found 87 parks that are not properly maintained during their recent survey. Therefore, GCC imposed a fine on such parks’ authorities for their negligence and poor maintenance. The total amount collected as fines was Rs 1,35,590.
The GCC conducted a survey of these parks from June 14 to June 17.
In a press release, the GCC revealed that 738 parks are being maintained by the park departments and are used by the public. Among these, the maintenance work of 571 parks has been handed over to private contractors.
These contractors are likely to hire several employees to ensure proper maintenance of the park and other work regarding beautification of parks will be finished within the allowed time.
According to the contractors’ agreement, they have to hire a security guard, a sanitary worker, and a park supervisor, among other staff, to keep them neat and clean.
As per the press release by GCC, 18 contractors were fined Rs 28,090 for keeping a smaller number of workers, and another 69 were fined Rs 1,07,500 for improper maintenance. These were revealed during the GCC’s field inspection.
As per the official, if they are fined three times, then their contracts will be disapproved.
