Chennai: The popularity of electric vehicles has been growing. Several state governments are stressing the use of electric buses for public transport amidst the soaring prices of petrol and diesel.
Tamil Nadu is not behind in this regard. Chennai’s transport department has been planning to acquire 100 electric buses to be operated by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC).
The tender for the procurement of 100 electric buses is in process. The first phase has been started by calling for Expressions of Interest (EoI). Time has come for the submission of the tender. National and international bus manufacturers have been asked to submit their tenders.
“The success of electric vehicles depends on the type of charging infrastructure.” “The EoI gives scope for exploring all these possibilities for procuring and operating the best model suited to our road conditions,” the official said.
According to a senior official, the tender will cover charging infrastructure conditions as well as bus repair and maintenance.Overall, 500 air-conditioned electric buses would hit the roads of three cities in Tamil Nadu, such as Chennai, Coimbatore, and Madurai.
The bidders have been urged to keep the floor of the bus low and it should not be more than 400mm so that passengers of all age groups can easily board or get down from these buses. The facility of a wheelchair ramp will be another attractive feature of the upcoming electric buses in Tamil Nadu.
