New Delhi: Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena approved Chhath Puja at designated ghats on Yamuna and asked Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to ensure clean ghats and water for devotees. The LG also cautioned Arvind Kejriwal against “misleading and premature propaganda”. The Lt Governor’s direction came in response to Kejriwal’s tweet in which he had said that worship can be done anywhere on the Yamuna.

The LG said that the Chief Minister’s statement is creating confusion among the people. “The proposal to hold Chhath Puja approved by the L-G was specific to designated Ghats- Kejriwal tweeted as if Puja could be held anywhere on the Yamuna, creating confusion amongst people,” the LG’s secretariat office said.

This year Chhath will be celebrated between 28-31 October. During this time people worship the Sun God. Chhath Puja is one of the most auspicious festivals in Bihar, Jharkhand and Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

In fact, Chief Minister Kejriwal had said a few days ago that Chhath Puja can be performed at all ghats on the banks of Yamuna. For this, he had talked about worshiping at more than 1100 places. It was also said that the government would spend Rs 25 crore for this. The Lieutenant Governor said that the Chief Minister’s statements are misleading the people.

On October 21, Delhi’s Revenue Minister Kailash Gehlot had told ANI, “Keeping in mind the religious and spiritual beliefs and sentiments of lakhs of people living in Delhi, UP and Bihar, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made my proposal to the banks of Yamuna river. It was approved to perform Chhath Puja at various ghats. He also informed that the government has issued orders to provide facilities to the devotees at 1100 ghats.

The Chief Minister said that due to Kovid for the last two years, the worship could not be done in public, but this time it will be organized with pomp. The minister had said, “The Delhi government has always been taking care of providing necessities like construction of ghats, providing facilities there and cleanliness around them, so as to make the occasion convenient for the devotees.”
