New Delhi: The Indian Air Force (IAF) Chinook helicopter had to make a precautionary landing in an open field around Barnala area in Punjab due to a technical fault.

The crew and helicopter are safe. This information has been shared by an Indian Air Force officer.

The Chinook helicopter is a multi-role, used to transport troops, vertical-lift platform, artillery, equipment and fuel.

The Chinook helicopter is also used in humanitarian and disaster relief operations and missions such as transportation of relief supplies and large-scale evacuation of refugees.

In September 2015, India finalized a contract to purchase 22 Apache helicopters and 15 Chinook helicopters from the US at a cost of approximately US$3 billion.
