Ajit Pratap Singh, superintendent of police, reported that one person was taken into custody and seven others were held for questioning. “Our investigation has begun. Police have been deployed in affected areas, and the situation is under control now.

Police stated that two cases had been filed after the altercation was reported at 8 pm on Tuesday.

Initial reports suggested that monks performing rites at the ancestral home of former chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb were attacked. The altercation, according to the police, occurred far from Deb’s house. They also denied media reports blaming a community for the attack as “false and baseless.”

CPI-M leader Pabitra Kar said all political parties were trying to raise their flags for the forthcoming assembly polls this year. “Several workers of the saffron party objected as our activists were raising flags… [They] also damaged our party office and destroyed our flags and festoons as well.”
