Lucknow: In a bizarre incident, a 7-year-old girl was kept locked up at a school in Sambhal, UP, for 18 hours after the school staff went to their respective homes without making sure no children were left behind.
The incident became a talking issue among the people only when the school opened on Wednesday morning and the girl was found.
Block Education Officer Pope Singh said a class 1 student from a primary school in Dhanari Patti, Gunnaur tehsil, was reportedly left behind after school hours on Tuesday. She was discovered when the school opened again the next morning. “The girl is unharmed,” a BEO stated.
Her maternal uncle claimed that on Tuesday, when she failed to reach home after school, her grandmother went to the school only to learn from the staff that there were no more students left there.
The girl’s family members started searching for her in the forest area, but she was not found anywhere. When the school opened at 8 am on Wednesday, the school staff came to know that the girl had failed to leave the school the previous day.
Block Education Officer Singh said that after the school hours were over, the teachers and other staff members did not check the rooms. “It is a case of carelessness and strong action will be taken against the entire staff,” he added.
