Shimla: Cloudbursts are common in Himachal Pradesh during this season. Another incident of cloudburst took place in Shalkhar and neighbouring villages of Pooh sub-division of Himachal Pradesh’s Kinnaur district late on Tuesday evening.
The incident damaged a huge amount of property. The revenue department has calculated that about twenty-five houses, 12 cow sheds, 7 irrigation schemes, 4 water mills, one pedestrian bridge, and one bridge are completely ruined. It is estimated that property worth around Rs 1.5 crore has been damaged.
Leo, Kaa, Malling, Nako, Chango, Shalkhar, and Yangthang villages of Pooh Block have been on the receiving end and experienced maximum damage. Several places, like Leo, Hango, and Chuling panchayats, have been disconnected from other areas due to damage to road connectivity.
As per information provided by the State Emergency Operation Centre in Shimla, heavy rain, hailstorms, and cloudburst have been reported from sub-division Pooh upstream, such as Leo, Nako, Maling, Kaa, Chango, Yangthang, and Shalakhar. Following the cloudburst, the water level of the nullahs has suddenly increased, which has created a flood-like situation.
According to official reports, it is estimated that in Shalkhar village, at least 20 ‘pacca’ houses were completely destroyed. Four public toilets, eight cowsheds, and four irrigation ponds were also spoiled. In Chango village, 2 ‘pacca’ houses were partially damaged, while 4 gharats, 2 cowsheds, 3 irrigation kuhals (9 channels), one pedestrian bridge, and one bridge of the public works department were ruined. “In Leo village, 3 pacca houses and 2 cowsheds were damaged.”
The people of Kinnaur district are living in a panic after the incessant cloudburst incidents in the state.
