New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday announced a major salary hike for cabinet ministers, ministers of state and MLAs and the monthly salary for each of these three categories was increased by Rs 40,000 per month.
After this hike, MLAs will now be entitled to a monthly salary of Rs 50,000 per month instead of the existing amount of Rs 10,000. The monthly salary of state ministers has been increased from Rs 10,900 to Rs 50,900. In case of cabinet ministers, this amount has been increased from Rs 11,000 to Rs 51,000. Cabinet Ministers, Ministers of State and MLAs who are entitled to receive other additional allowances and allowances apart from the monthly salary will remain the same.
Ideally, this would mean that the actual monthly emoluments received by legislators, including salary, perks and allowances, would now go up to Rs 1.21 lakh from the current rate of Rs 81,000 per month, said a state government official.
Similarly, from now on the actual monthly pay of the ministers will increase from Rs 1.10 lakh per month to about Rs 1.50 lakh per month.
Announcing the increased salary in the state assembly on Thursday, the Chief Minister said that the decision to increase the salary has been taken in view of the fact that the salary of MLAs in West Bengal is very less as compared to MLAs of other states.
Political observers, however, believe that these hiked salaries for ministers and legislators are bound to further irk state government employees, who have been receiving enhanced dearness allowance and benefits at par with central government employees for a long time.
