CM Biplab Deb of Tripura resigns a year ahead of elections

Agartala: Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Saturday, May 14, resigned from his post with barely eight months left for the 2023 assembly polls in the state. Biplab Deb made the announcement after meeting the governor at Raj Bhavan.

The chief minister said he submitted the resignation letter to Governor SN Arya.

“We are taken by surprise. Don’t know what prompted him. But obviously he had discussions with the party central leadership. The party may have some plans and we are confident that it will be good for the party,” said a minister in Deb’s Cabinet.

“Party wants me to work to strengthen the organisation,” news agency quoted Biplab Deb as saying.

He became the chief minister of the state after the BJP won the 2018 Tripura polls, ending the 25-year-long rule of the Left Front government.

As Deb resigns, the BJP legislature party in Tripura to meet later today to elect its new leader. Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma is expected to take charge in the interim, reported news agency.
