CM Kejriwal eating mangoes and sweets every day in jail to raise sugar levels: ED tells Delhi Court

New Delhi: On Thursday, The Enforcement Directorate told the court that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, a diabetic, was consuming mangoes, aloo puri, and sweets daily to raise his blood sugar level to make grounds for medical bail. They argue that he is doing this in order to establish grounds for bail by citing fluctuations in his blood sugar levels.

The ED made the claim while the court was hearing the plea of Kejriwal, who has been arrested in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case, seeking doctor consultation. In response to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s request for regular health check-ups and consultations with his doctor before Special Judge Kaveri Baweja, the Enforcement Directorate issued its statement.

The court asked the Tihar jail authorities to submit a report of the diet being consumed by Arvind Kejriwal. The court also asked Kejriwal’s counsel to submit details of the diet being given to the AAP supremo, who has type 2 diabetes.

The counsel representing the ED said, “Arvind Kejriwal is regularly consuming sugary tea, bananas, sweets, puri, aloo ki sabzi etc despite being a patient of diabetes mellitus type II and knowing well that consumption of such things leads to a rise in blood sugar,” the ED further said, “This is being done to create a medical emergency to get sympathetic treatment from the court on medical grounds,”

The investigating agency further said that doctors are deployed round the clock in the jail and Kejriwal’s blood sugar level is being measured twice a day. Citing Kejriwal’s medical report, the ED said that on April 1, the day he was brought to Tihar jail, the Delhi CM’s blood sugar level was 139 mg/dl. The ED said that On the morning of April 14, it was recorded at 276 mg/dl.

Kejriwal’s lawyer said that the ED was making a statement for the media,”Is this all that is given to a person with sugar problems?”. The court then sought a list of the diet prescribed for Kejriwal, which matches the food he is eating in jail. The court will continue hearing the case on Friday.
