Coimbatore Blast: NIA raids in three states including Tamil Nadu, raids at more than 60 locations

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday conducted raids at 60 different places in three states of South India - Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka in connection with suspected ISIS sympathisers who are reportedly radicalised through videos.

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Wednesday conducted raids at 60 different places in three states of South India – Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka in connection with suspected ISIS sympathisers who are reportedly radicalised through videos.

The searches began at 6 am at over 60 locations out of which 40 are in Tamil Nadu. The people having links with terror organisations are under NIA’s scanner. The Anti-terror agency is also raiding multiple places in Karnataka.

There was a cylinder explosion in a car in Coimbatore on the evening of 23 October. The car driver had died in this accident. According to media reports, mastermind Mubeen (29) was killed in this blast. Police had arrested six people in the initial investigation. All of them were residents of Coimbatore.

According to the NIA, before carrying out the terrorist attack, the accused had hatched a conspiracy for several months. These include Muhammad Azharuddin (23), Afsar Khan (28), Muhammad Thalha (25), Muhammad Riyas (27), Firoz Ismail (27) and Muhammad Nawaz Ismail (25).

The NIA had seized 109 items including potassium from the accused. It contains potassium nitrate, sulphur, black powder, McCracken fuse about two meters long, nitro glycerin, red phosphorus, PERN powder, aluminum powder, oxygen canister, 9 volt battery clip, wire, iron nail, switch, gas cylinder, insulation tape, Packing tape, hand gloves, notebooks with details of Islamic ideology and details about Jihad etc. were seized.
