Birmingham: The Indian men’s hockey team has grabbed two silver medals in the Commonwealth Games and is looking to sail into another final today. On Saturday, India will face South Africa in the semifinals of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
The semifinal encounter looks to be a tricky contest as the African team is now a much improved side, having knocked out New Zealand in their last league match and confirmed their berth in the last four.
The talk is in the air about who will break Australia’s monopoly on hockey in the CWG. They have grabbed a gold medal every time since the introduction of hockey to the CWG in 1998. It means Down Under has won six gold medals, a fantastic achievement from every point of view.
According to history and current rankings, the Olympic bronze medalist is the clear favourite to defeat 13th-ranked South Africa and secure their place in the title match.
India earns a lot of penalty corners as a result of its persistent attack on the opponents’ goal mouth. It would be an uphill task for the African defenders to tackle the Indian forwards.
The Olympic bronze medalists played fast and attacking hockey in their group matches. The Manpreet Singh-led team won three matches and drew 4-4 with the host England in the group stage. The clinical Indian team is getting stronger with the progress of the CWG.
The team’s forwards, such as Mandeep Singh, Gurjant Singh, and others, need to be careful and will have to grab every scoring opportunity. There is no margin of error here.
Head to head, India has defeated South Africa in all three of their previous encounters in the Commonwealth Games. Earlier this year, India overpowered South Africa by 10-2 in its two FIH Pro League matches in Potchefstroom.
The Manpreet Singh-led side is set to play impressive hockey and move into the final. The match will get underway at 10:30 pm IST. Be ready to watch exciting hockey between the men in blue and the Proteas.
