Commonwealth Games 2022: Priyanka Goswami creates history, wins silver medal in women’s 10000m race walk final

Birmingham: Proud moment for India, Priyanka Goswami has won the first medal for India on the ninth day of the 22nd Commonwealth Games being played in Birmingham, England. Priyanka Goswami on Saturday won a historic silver medal in the women’s 10km race walk. Priyanka clocked her best to cover the 10,000 meters in 43:38.00 minutes, while Australia’s Jemima Montag took the gold with a timing of 42:34.00.

Priyanka took the lead on the track as soon as the whistle blew and was first after 4,000 metres. Shortly thereafter, she trailed Jemima and Emily Wamusi Angie of Kenya. With just two kms left in the competition, Priyanka made a spectacular comeback to beat her Kenyan rival and claim a silver medal. Australia’s Montag was crowned the Commonwealth Games champion clocking 42:34.30, while Kenya’s Ngii took silver with 43:50.86.

This is India’s third medal in track and field events after Murali Sreeshankar (silver in long jump) and Tejaswini Shankar (bronze in high jump). With this Priyanka also became the first Indian woman to win a medal in racewalking. She is also the second Indian player to win a Commonwealth medal in this sport. Earlier, Harminder Singh had won bronze in the 20 km racewalking event of the 2010 Delhi Games.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur said that India’s victory in the Race Walking World Championships earlier this year is still fresh in memory and with her maiden medal in CWG, Priyanka Goswami has cemented India’s presence in the discipline. Congratulations Priyanka!

After Priyanka win, The official Twitter handle of Team India/Indian Olympic Association said, ‘Congratulations @Priyanka_Goswam on winning a for Team at the women’s 10000 M Race walk competition along with achieving your Personal Best timing’.

Indian boxer Amit Panghal advanced to the final in the men’s flyweight event of the Commonwealth Games here on Saturday while Neetu Ganghas also advanced to the women’s (45-48kg) minimumweight final to ensure silver medals for both of them. Neetu, who entered the ring first, defeated Priyanka Dhillon of Canada in the semi-finals by RSC (referee stopping the match) to ensure her silver medal. She will now face the host country’s Rezatan Demi Jade in the final. Panghal then defeated Patrick Chinayamba of Zimbabwe 5-0 in a unanimous decision in the semi-finals. He will face MacDonald Kieran of England in the final on August 7.
