Commonwealth Games 2022: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu creates history, wins India’s first gold medal

New Delhi: India’s star weightlifter and Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in the women’s 49kg event at the Birmingham Commonwealth 2022 Games. She clinched the gold medal by lifting a total of 201 kg including 88 in the snatch round and 113 kg in the clean and jerk. This is India’s first gold medal in the 22nd Commonwealth Games. In the clean and jerk round, Mirabai started with 105kg and won the gold medal. After this, there was a battle between other players for silver and bronze.

In the end, she lifted 109 kg in his second attempt at clean and jerk. In the third attempt, she went to lift 113 kg and was successful in that too and set a new Commonwealth Games record. She went for 114kg in the fourth attempt but failed. This is India’s third medal of the day from the sport after Sanket Sargar (silver) and Gururaja (bronze) delivered earlier in Commonwealth Games 2022.

Mauritius’ Marie Ranivosoa finished second with 172kg (76 and 96) and claimed the silver medal for the second time in a row. Canada’s Hannah Kaminsky lifted a total of 171 kg (74 and 97) to finish third and claimed the bronze medal.

88 kg weight lifted in snatch round

Mirabai Chanu broke the Commonwealth Games record by lifting 88kg in the snatch round and also equaled her best performance. She then secured his gold medal in the clean and jerk round by lifting 105 kg in his very first attempt. In the first round itself, Chanu had a lead of 12 kg.

Started clean and jerk round with 105kg

Mirabai Chanu started the snatch round by lifting 84 kg. She then broke the Commonwealth record by lifting 88 kg in his second attempt. In the third attempt, she tried to lift 90 kg but failed. After this, in the clean and jerk round, Mirabai lifted 105 kg in a bang style. He lifted 109 kg in his second attempt of clean and jerk. In the third attempt, she went to lift 113 kg and was successful in that too and set a new Commonwealth Games record. She went for 114kg in the fourth attempt but this time she failed.

Won second gold and third medal in Commonwealth Games

This is 27-year-old Mirabai Chanu’s third medal at the Commonwealth Games. He won a silver medal in the 48 kg weight category in Glasgow in 2014. After this, he won the gold medal in the 48 kg weight category at Gold Coast. Mirabai won the silver medal in the 49 kg weight category in the Tokyo Olympics and has now captured the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in the same weight category.
