New Delhi: A day after the goods and services tax (GST) on packaged food items like milk, curd, and paneer came into effect, the Congress and leaders of other parties protested over price increases at the Parliament complex on Tuesday.
Besides Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, a few opposition leaders, including Supriya Sule of the NCP, Ram Gopal Yadav of the Samajwadi party, and Priyanka Chaturvedi of the Shiv Sena, also participated in the demonstration that was held in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in the Parliament complex.
The Congress members raised anti-government chants as they called for a rollback in the cost of LPG.
Additionally, they carried placards and banners bearing the slogan “High inflation, continual price rises hurt common people.”
MPs from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha of the Congress took part in the protest. They included the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, and the leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury.
“The extra burden of five percent GST on curd, paneer and other commodities of daily use will put extra pressure on the pockets of common people. We will protest inside the House also, “Kharge said.
The Congress whip in Lok Sabha, Manickam Tagore, said opposition members led by his party wanted a discussion on price rises and GST, but the government refused, and the speaker adjourned the House until 2 p.m.
“We will raise the same when the House reconvenes.”Why is the government afraid of holding the discussion?” he asked.
