Along with postponing Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ by two days due to Diwali, the party has also extended the Bharat Jodo Yatra by a day for the new President’s taking over ceremony. Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel will also attend the function. Before leaving for Delhi, Baghel said in Raipur that Mallikarjun Kharge would take over as the national president of the Congress party. I have also been asked to be present on this occasion. So, I am going to Delhi.

Mallikarjun Kharge will pay homage to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi by visiting Raj Ghat on Wednesday morning. He will also visit the memorial sites of former Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Lal Bahadur Shastri and Rajiv Gandhi as well as the memorial site of former Deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram. The preparations are almost complete at the Congress headquarters regarding the program related to his taking over. Security personnel and several party workers took stock of the last minute preparations. Congress’s Central Election Authority chief Madhusudan Mistry will formally hand over the election certificate to Kharge on Wednesday morning.

Mallikarjun Kharge will face many challenges to consolidate the oldest party ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The first challenge for Kharge is the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh assembly elections. In such a situation, it will be a big challenge for them to unite the party before the general elections.

BJP has a strong hold in Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat. In such a situation, the assembly elections here will be the first challenge for Kharge. At present, only two states Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh have a Congress government. Himachal and Gujarat’s exams are followed by assembly elections in nine states in 2023, including their home state Karnataka. It will also be a challenge for him to maintain a balance between the experienced and the youth in the party.

Political analyst Rashid Kidwai says Kharge faces several challenges as he will have to coordinate with members of ‘Team Rahul Gandhi’, who hold key positions in AICC, CWC and most states. On the other hand, political critic Sanjay Kumar said that there are many challenges for the party and unfortunately Kharge’s leadership ability will be tested only on the basis of the electoral success of the Congress.
