Later today, the Congress Working Committee (CWC) will also hold a meeting to discuss party’s performance in the assembly elections 2022. Congress, the ruling party in Punjab was overthrown by the AAP and also failed to win in any of the four other states – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur – against the BJP.
Despite the high-octane campaigns, led by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress managed to win only two seats in the 403-seat Uttar Pradesh assembly. The party’s vote share fell to 2.33% and over 97% of its candidates lost their security deposits.
In 2019, Rahul Gandhi had resigned from Congress president post after the party suffered its second consecutive defeat in general elections. Sonia Gandhi, who took over the reins of the party again as interim president had also offered to quit in August 2020 after an open revolt by a section of leaders, referred to as G-23, but the CWC had urged her to continue.
