Shillong: In Meghalaya, the Trinamool Congress and the Congress, which is on the way to form an alternative government to keep Conrad Sangma’s National People’s Party (NPP) out of power, suffered a major setback on Sunday. Meghalaya’s two major regional parties United Democratic Party (UDP) and People’s Democratic Front (PDF) on Sunday extended their support to the NPP to form the next government in the northeastern state.
UDP President Metbah Lindoh, Conrad K. Said support in a letter to Sangma. UDP has secured 11 seats. With this, the NPP now has the support of 45 MLAs in the 59-member state assembly. Apart from the BJP and HSPDP, which have two MLAs each, two independent MLAs have already submitted their letters of support to the NPP. Meanwhile, in Meghalaya, a special session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has been called for the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected MLAs and the election of the Speaker.
A senior official said on Sunday that the first meeting of the House would be held on Monday and the pro tem speaker would administer the oath of office to the MLAs. He informed that the House will meet again on March 9 for the election of the Speaker. On the other hand, the BJP high command is engaged in brainstorming in Delhi regarding the government in Tripura and Nagaland.
North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) president and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday reached Home Minister Amit Shah’s residence to discuss government formation in the two states. During this, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio also attended the meeting.
According to sources, the government formation and cabinet structure were discussed during the meeting. The BJP returned to power in Tripura and retained power in Nagaland with coalition partner National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP).
Government without opposition in Nagaland
All parties in Nagaland have extended unconditional support to the NDPP-BJP alliance. With this, now the government without opposition will run in Nagaland. The pre-poll alliance partners NDPP-BJP had won 25 and 12 seats, respectively. In this way, it got a total of 37 seats in the 60-member House. All the parties of Nagaland have now decided to run the government together.
Please tell that here NCP won seven, NPP five, LJP (Ram Vilas) two, Naga People’s Front (NPF) and RPI (Athawale) two each and JD (U) one seat. Apart from this, four independents had won. Though the NDPP-BJP alliance is yet to stake claim to form the government, it has received unconditional support from other political parties to continue with its second term.
PM Modi will attend the swearing-in ceremony of all the three states
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the swearing-in ceremony of new Chief Ministers and their Ministers of Meghalaya and Nagaland on Tuesday and Tripura on Wednesday. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda and some other Union ministers are also expected to attend the swearing-in ceremony in these state capitals.
Official sources said the swearing-in ceremony of the new Meghalaya chief minister and his council of ministers would take place in Shillong at 11 a.m., while that of Nagaland would take place at Kohima at 1.45 p.m. Tripura’s new chief minister and ministers will be sworn in by the governor in Agartala on Wednesday.
