Following the filing of a complaint, the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha altered the idol’s appearance after being given instructions by the police.

When contacted by media persons, Chandrachur Goswami, working president of the West Bengal state unit of the All India Hindu Mahasabha, told them, “We consider Gandhi as a true asura. He is the real asura. That is why we crafted the murti in this manner.

“The Central government has been promoting Mahatma Gandhi. We were asked to alter the murti and change it. Home Ministry has put pressure on us. “Our aim is to remove Gandhi from all places and instead keep Netaji Subash Chandra Bose and other freedom fighters in front,” Goswami said.

As per the mythology, Goddess Durga killed Mahusasur in an epic battle to abolish his evil power.

Political parties criticize move

Most political parties slammed this move, such as ruling Trinamool Congress in the state and the opposition parties including the Bharatiya Janata Party, CPI-M, and Congress.

The ruling Trinamool Congress’ state spokesperson, Kunal Ghosh, said if this was really done, it was nothing but blasphemy.

“It is an insult to the Father of the Nation. It is an insult to every citizen of this country. What would the BJP say about such an insult? “We know which ideological camp Gandhiji’s assassin belonged to,” Ghosh added.
