CWG 2022: Fantastic performance of players in wrestling competition: Bajrang, Deepak and Sakshi win gold, Anshu gets silver, Divya, Mohit win bronze

New Delhi: Indian players continue to perform well in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. Proud moment for India, India’s star wrestlers and Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Deepak Punia made India memorable on Friday in the wrestling event of the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. All three wrestlers won gold medals in their respective weight categories. India has increased its number of gold medals to 9 in the medal tally and has now reached number 5. Due to this golden campaign of wrestlers, he pushed South Africa and Scotland back in the medal tally.

Bajrang win gold medal in the 65kg category

Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Bajrang was so dominant in the 65kg category that he won three out of four matches in the first round itself. He defeated Lachlan McNeil of Canada 9-2 in the final. Earlier, after registering a technical superiority (10-0) win over George Ram of England, he had easily made it to the final.

Sakshi win gold medal in the 62kg category

On the other hand, Sakshi Malik won the gold medal in the final of 62 kg by defeating Ana Gondinez of Canada. This is Sakshi’s first gold medal in Commonwealth Games. Earlier she has won a bronze medal at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. At the same time, Anshu Malik opened the country’s account in wrestling by winning a silver medal in the 57 kg freestyle event. Olympic bronze medalist Sakshi Malik reached the final with a technical superiority 10-0 win over Cameroon’s Berthe Emiliene Itane Ngole in the last four.

Deepak win gold medal in the 86kg category

India’s third gold from wrestling was put by young Deepak Poonia, who defeated Pakistan’s Mohammad Inam 3-0 to capture the gold medal. Deepak is participating in the Commonwealth Games for the first time. It did wonders in the 86kg weight category.

Mohit-Divya also win bronze medals

Divya Kakran also tried to finish the teas of not winning gold by getting bronze. Divya defeated Tiger Lily Cocker Lemali of Tonga 2-0 via by-fall in the bronze medal match in the 68 kg weight category of women’s freestyle. At the same time, Mohit Grewal (125 kg) trampled Aaron Johnson of Jamaica 0-6 through a by-fall.

Due to this spectacular performance of the wrestlers, India, which has reached number 5 in the points table, now has a total of 25 medals with 9 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze medals.
