CWG 2022: Indian para-powerlifter Sudhir wins historic record gold medal in Men’s heavyweight event

Birmingham: Indian players continue their scintillating performance in the 22nd Commonwealth Games being played in Birmingham. After a stellar performance by weightlifters, India’s para powerlifter Sudhir won the historic gold medal in men’s heavyweight para powerlifting and not only this, he also created a new Commonwealth Games record with a total of 134.5 points. Sudhir lifted 208 kg in his first attempt and then took the lead with his second weight of 212 kg.

Sudhir, 27, bronze medalist of the Asian Para Games, is disabled due to the effects of polio. He opened the account in India’s medal tally in Para Games of India in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022.

He defeated Nigeria’s Ikechuku Obichuku (133.6 points) by 0.9 points. Sudhir started his event with a successful attempt to lift 208 kg without breaking a sweat and secured 132.0 points.

Sudhir gave sixth gold to India
Sudhir won the historic gold medal with 134.5 points, creating a new Commonwealth Games record. It was the 6th gold medal won by the Indian contingent at the 22nd Commonwealth Games and 20th overall. Sudhir has become the first para athlete to win a gold medal for India at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

Ikechukwu Christian Obichukwu won the silver with 133.6 points, while Micky Yule bagged the bronze with 130.9 points.

Sudhir had won a bronze in men’s upto 88kg with a best lift of 214kg at the World Para Powerlifting Asia-Oceania Open Championship in South Korea in June.

What is Power Paralifting
This is a commonly done bench press exercise. The winning or losing in this competition is decided on the basis of the ratio of the weight of the person lifting the weight and the weight of the body. Sudhar, with a weight of 87.30 kg, lifted 208 in his first attempt, 213 in the second and 217 kg in the third. His score was 134.5.

Nigeria’s Powerlifter Receives Continuing Challenge
During this event, Sudhir was constantly challenged by a Nigerian powerlifter, who pushed Sudhir to second position with his second attempt. But he kept his spirits up and took the increased weight in every attempt and won the medal. In the third attempt, lifting the weight of 217 kg, captured the gold medal. He was unsuccessful in his last attempt but met the expectations of the fans and achieved the golden success..
