CWG 2022: India’s Vijay Kumar bags bronze in the men’s 60kg category, Sushila Devi bags silver in the women’s 48 kg category

New Delhi: India’s Vijay Kumar Yadav has won the bronze medal in the men’s 60kg category category of the judo event of Commonwealth Games 2022. Apart from weightlifting, this is India’s 2st in judo and overall 8th medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022. After winning his repechage match against Dylan Munro of Scotland, Vijay went to the bronze medal match, where he defeated Petros Christodoulides of Cyprus 10-0 in a one-sided fashion. India got its eighth medal in CWG 2022. Yadav was defeated by Joshua Kaz of Australia in the quarterfinals.

Earlier on Monday, 27-year-old Sushila Devi Likabam won the silver medal in the women’s 48 kg category of the judo event of the Commonwealth Games 2022. Apart from weightlifting, this is India’s first and overall 7th medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022. In a tight match, Sushila was defeated by Michaela Whitebuy of South Africa in the final. This is Sushila’s second medal in the Commonwealth Games. The judoka won a silver medal in 2014.

The final battle for gold proved to be an intense contest between Sushila and Michaela as both judokas were giving everything until the final whistle. Both failed to register a single point at the end of regulation time. The competition then went into a golden score time, where the South African judoka won the gold medal in 4.25 minutes by placing Sushila Devi’s shoulder on the mat via a ‘waza-ari’. In the quarter-finals, Shushila defeated Harriet Bonface and then defeated Priscilla Morand of Mauritius in the semi-finals to claim her second win.

Manipur’s judoka Sushila won the gold medal in the 2019 South Asian Games. He qualified for the 2020 Summer Olympics as the sole representative for India in Judo. Sushila was the only athlete to represent the country in judo at the Tokyo Olympics. Sushila considers India’s legendary boxer Mary Kom as her role model and wants to win medals at World Championships and Olympics for the country like her. Sushila was born on February 1, 1995. She is a native of Manipur. Sushila was fond of Judo since childhood, as her family has been associated with this sport.
