Patna: After the recent hooch tragedy in Gujarat, where about 50 people died, the same kind of incident has occurred in Bihar’s Saran district. The death toll mounted to nine on Friday. The tragic incident took place at Bhatha village in the Maker police station area.
Three people succumbed to death at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), and one died on the way to the hospital, said Dr I S Thakur, the superintendent of the hospital.
Two victims, Chandan Mahto (30) and Kamal Mahto (65), were brought dead to Chhapra Sadar hospital. Villagers have claimed that those who consumed contaminated alcoholic drinks and fell ill have lost their eyesight as well.
Saran SP Santosh Kumar admitted that several people drank liquor in the village on the occasion of Nag Panchami on Tuesday. DSP-rank officers from Marhoura and Sonepur are camping in the village to stop any such incident. Police are roaming the entire area to determine the exact number of people who consumed liquor.
Saran DM Rajesh Meena said doctors’ team and paramedical staff have been pressed into service in the village to find out the exact cause of deaths.
