New Delhi: On Friday, The Defence Ministry approved the proposal to purchase nine maritime surveillance aircraft for the Indian Navy, sources have said.

The Defence Ministry also said the Ministry approved six maritime patrol aircraft for the Indian Coast Guard. The defence officials said that the transport aircraft would be equipped with the required radars and sensors and turned into a maritime patrol plane by the Defence Research and Development Organisation’s Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS).

They added that the 15 maritime patrol planes would be built upon the Made in India C-295 transport aircraft and the worth of the project is around Rs 29,000 crore.

On Wednesday, the Defense Ministry signed a contract worth Rs 1,752.13 crore with a Kanpur-based firm for the manufacture and supply of 463 indigenously made 12.7 mm stabilized remote control guns for the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard.

In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said that this acquisition will provide a further boost to the vision of “Aatmanirbharta in Defence”. It added,”This contract will also open up a large avenue in defence manufacturing for over 125 Indian vendors and Defence PSUs for over a period of five years.”
