A massive dust and thunderstorm wreaked havoc in Delhi-NCR on Friday, claiming two lives and leaving 23 others injured. Trees were uprooted, and buildings suffered extensive damage as the storm swept through the region, leaving behind a trail of destruction.
In the aftermath of the storm, the Delhi police were inundated with distress calls, receiving 152 reports of uprooted trees and 55 instances of building damages. Additionally, over 200 residents faced power outages, exacerbating the chaos caused by the severe weather conditions.
The storm’s impact reverberated across transportation networks, causing traffic disruptions and flight diversions. Nine flights bound for Delhi were redirected to Jaipur as strong winds and thunderstorms made landing precarious. Traffic congestion ensued in various areas due to reduced visibility and debris-laden roads.
Tragically, several cars were damaged in Noida’s Sector 58 when a shuttering, used for building repairs, collapsed onto the vehicles.
As Delhi-NCR grapples with the aftermath of the storm, the Indian Meteorological Department issued warnings of continued inclement weather. Residents woke up to light rain and cloudy skies on Saturday morning, with forecasts predicting further rain and thunderstorms throughout the day.
With winds exceeding 50 kmph reported late on Friday night, the IMD advised residents to exercise caution, stay indoors, and secure windows to mitigate potential risks. Unnecessary travel was discouraged as authorities worked tirelessly to restore normalcy amidst the ongoing weather challenges.
