Delhi AIIMS doctors successfully perform balloon dilation on the grape-size heart of a fetus in 90 seconds

Doctors told that the 28-year-old pregnant woman had suffered three miscarriages and fainted when she was told about the poor heart condition of her unborn foetus. However, the woman wanted to continue with the pregnancy and agreed to allow the doctors to perform treatment on the fetal heart.

New Delhi: AIIMS Delhi has successfully performed balloon dilation of a grape-sized baby’s heart in the mother’s womb. A 28-year-old pregnant patient was admitted to the hospital with three previous pregnancy losses. When the doctors informed the parents about the heart condition of the child, they consented to the dilation and expressed their desire to continue with the current pregnancy.

According to news agency ANI, after this the process of dilation was done at AIIMS Cardiothoracic Sciences Center. A team of interventional cardiologists and fetal medicine specialists performed the successful dilation procedure. According to the team of doctors from the Department of Cardiology and Cardiac Anesthesia along with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Fetal Medicine) of AIIMS, “Both the fetus and the mother are fine after the surgery.”

The team of doctors told, ‘The team of doctors is monitoring the growth of the fetus. Some types of serious heart diseases can be diagnosed when the child is in the mother’s womb. Sometimes, treating them in the womb can improve the baby’s outlook after birth and lead to normal development.’

Surgery done in 90 seconds
The senior doctor who performed the surgery explained, ‘We inserted a needle through the mother’s abdomen into the child’s heart. Then using a balloon catheter, we opened the obstructed valve to improve blood flow. We hope and expect that the baby’s heart will develop better and the heart disease will be less severe at birth.’ The doctor said, ‘The whole process had to be done very quickly. It was very challenging. We were able to do it in about 90 seconds.
