Delhi airport sees 30 international and domestic flights delayed as dense fog reduces visibility

New Delhi: On Tuesday, airport authorities informed that as many as 30 flights have been delayed in both arrivals and departures including international and domestic flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport of Delhi. Flight operations at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport were also disrupted on Tuesday as dense fog brought down visibility at 150m, data at 5.30 am showed.

Delhi airport sees 30 international and domestic flights delayed as dense fog reduces visibility

New Delhi: On Tuesday, airport authorities informed that as many as 30 flights have been delayed in both arrivals and departures including international and domestic flights at Indira Gandhi International Airport of Delhi. Delhi and its neighbouring areas in the National Capital Region (NCR) woke up to a cold morning and dense fog on Tuesday as the cold wave strengthened its grip over northern India.

Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport were also disrupted on Tuesday as dense fog brought down visibility at 150m, data at 5.30 am showed. The Delhi Airport also issued an alert stating while landing and takeoffs continue at the airport, flights that are not CAT III complaint will face issues.

The Delhi airport’s advisory read, “While landing and take-offs continue at Delhi airport, flights that are not CAT III compliant may get affected. Passengers requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted.” The airport authorities also issued passenger advisory, informing them the flight operations may get affected due to foggy weather conditions.

The airport sources said that as of the writing of this report, five flights were diverted to Jaipur from 8.30 am to 10 am due to weather conditions at Delhi airport. A layer of dense fog was witnessed over the Delhi-NCR region on Tuesday morning, as the temperature dropped to almost 7 degrees in the national capital, according to the India Meteorological Department.

The IMD today morning released satellite images showing a layer of fog spreading over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. Attached RAPID INSAT 3DR satellite imagery shows fog layer spreading over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and north Madhya Pradesh visible in the yellow-circled area.

The visibility was recorded at 500m or less in Delhi and its neighbouring areas, with 100m in Delhi’s Palam and 200m in Safdarjung, the data at 5.30 am showed. The visibility was as low as 200 to 300m on Delhi-Meerut Highway in Ghaziabad. Fog alert was displayed at various points on the highway to caution commuters.

The visibility was even recorded at zero in Punjab’s Amritsar and Patiala. Similarly, in Haryana’s Ambala, the visibility dropped to zero. The Regional Meteorological Department (RMC) has said Delhi is likely to witness partly cloudy sky, dense to very dense fog in the morning. People took refuge in night shelters as mercury level dipped in the national capital.

Flight operations at Delhi’s IGI were also disrupted on Monday morning as dense fog engulfed the capital, reducing visibility to zero. On Monday, Delhi recorded The minimum temperature at 9.4 degrees Celsius. Visibility dropped to 125 meters in several parts of Delhi, and most parts of the National Capital Region (NCR) also experienced low visibility.
