Delhi CM announces ex-gratia of ₹ 1 crore for family of ASI Dayal stabbed to death by snatcher

New Delhi: In a horrific incident, Delhi ASI was publicly stabbed to death in the national capital. He was trying to arrest the accused in a case of mobile theft when Japatmar attacked the Delhi Police constable multiple times with a knife. Delhi Police constable injured after being stabbed repeatedly by a man caught for alleged mobile snatching. The 57-year-old constable, Shambhu Dayal, died four days later, on Sunday.
His family will be given ₹ 1 crore, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced today.

The horrific video from January 4 shows Shambhu Dayal being stabbed repeatedly as a large number of people watch from a safe distance.

Delhi Police said that 57-year-old ASI Shambhu Dayal, originally from Sikar, Rajasthan, is survived by his wife, son and two daughters. Police said that last Wednesday, January 4, a woman resident of Mayapuri Phase-1 had complained about her husband’s mobile phone being snatched and threatening her. After this ASI Dayal reached the spot, where the complainant identified the accused.

A police official said that while going to the police station, accused Anish took out a knife hidden in his shirt and stabbed Dayal in the neck, chest, abdomen and back. He told that officials of Mayapuri police station reached the spot and overpowered Anish. He was later arrested. Whereas, ASI Dayal was taken to the hospital.

Delhi Police wrote in another tweet, “ASI Shambhu Dayal, who sacrificed his life on the altar of duty, left us all with tears in our eyes and courage in our hearts, merged with the five elements. Today, his last rites were performed in his native village in Rajasthan.” During this, many senior officers and policemen paid heartfelt tributes to him.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal paid tribute to the policeman on Twitter.

“While protecting the public, ASI Shambhu ji did not even care about his life. He became a martyr. We are proud of him. There is no value for his life, but in his honor, we will give an honorarium of one crore rupees to his family,” Mr Kejriwal said.

The Delhi Police, in a moving homage, praised Shambhu Dayal for not letting the thief escape.
