A bench of Justices Mukta Gupta and Poonam A Bamba suspended the sentence of Kuldeep Sengar from January 27 to February 10 for his daughter's marriage.
New Delhi: The Delhi High Court granted bail to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a former BJP legislator who was convicted of the Unnao rape case in 2017 and given a life sentence. Sengar had petitioned the High Court for a temporary release so that he can attend his daughter’s wedding.
A bench of Justices Mukta Gupta and Poonam A Bamba suspended the sentence of Kuldeep Sengar from January 27 to February 10. During his period of freedom, the BJP leader must report daily to the relevant SHO and provide two sureties of Rs 1 lakh each.
Kuldeep’s request
Kuldeep Sengar’s lawyer informed the court that because he is the sole male member in his family, he must make plans for the wedding rituals and ceremonies that will take place in Gorakhpur and Lucknow.
Prior to that, the former BJP MLA had informed the court that the wedding would take place on February 8.
Why is Kuldeep in prison?
Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the expelled BJP legislator, had raped a minor in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao in 2017, so he has been serving a life sentence. He was sentenced after he was found guilty and convicted by Delhi court in December 2019. He was convicted under Section 376 of the IPC and Sections 5(c) and 6 of the POCSO Act.
Sengar, along with two police officers and four others, were also found accused and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years. They had murdered the petitioner’s father. The judgements of conviction were passed by Additional Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma after the trials were transferred from Unnao to Delhi.
