Delhi High Court Cancels Bail for Arvind Kejriwal: Major Setback for AAP Leader

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has received a big blow from the High Court. Delhi High Court has put a stay on the bail granted to him. Delhi High Court, citing several flaws in the trial court’s order, gave this decision on the ED’s petition against the national convenor of the Aam Aadmi. This means that Arvind Kejriwal, arrested in the alleged liquor scam, will have to remain in jail for now.

Earlier, the vacation bench of Justice Sudhir Kumar Jain had reserved the order on June 21 by placing an interim stay on the decision of the trial court. The court had said that the bail order will not be implemented until the verdict is pronounced.

Special judge Nyaya Bindu of the trial court had granted bail to Kejriwal on June 20. The Delhi Chief Minister was ordered to be released on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh. The court had granted relief to the national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party with conditions such as not leaving the country and not influencing witnesses or evidence. Kejriwal was to be released on Friday after the decision at 8 pm on Thursday night. Before he could come out of jail, ED had knocked on the door of the High Court.

Kejriwal also moved the Supreme Court against the interim stay on his bail. However, the court refused to give a quick hearing or lift the stay and postponed the matter till June 26. The Supreme Court said that it will wait for the High Court’s decision.

The Delhi Chief Minister was arrested on March 21 in a money laundering case related to the alleged liquor scam. The court had granted him interim bail for 21 days during the Lok Sabha elections. Kejriwal had to go to jail again after surrendering on June 2 under a pre-determined condition. It is alleged that Aam Aadmi Party leaders took bribe by giving illegal benefits to liquor traders in the excise policy made for Delhi in 2021-22 and it was also used in Goa elections.
