Delhi Implements CAA Rules: Stringent Security Measures in Place with 43 Identified ‘Hotspots

As the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) rules came into effect, Delhi witnessed an escalation in security measures, particularly in sensitive areas like the northeastern parts of the city, Shaheen Bagh, and Jamia Nagar. Delhi Police, in the northeast district, identified over 40 hotspots, including Seelampur, Jaffrabad, Mustafabad, Bhajanpura, Khajoori Khas, and Seemapuri, where intensified patrols and flag marches were conducted.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Northeast Delhi) Joy Tirkey emphasized the commitment to maintaining law and order, stating, “We have identified 43 hotspots in northeast Delhi, and night patrolling was comparatively high at these locations. The safety of every person in Delhi’s northeast district is our responsibility.”

The Delhi Police’s cyber unit is actively monitoring social media platforms to prevent the spread of provocative posts and rumors. With at least 29 meetings held with peace committee members, the authorities aim to curb misinformation. Paramilitary forces carried out a flag march in southeast Delhi, while local police patrolled on bikes.

The implementation of the CAA rules, announced just days ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, grants Indian nationality to persecuted non-Muslim migrants from neighboring countries. The Modi government’s move focuses on Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, Parsis, and Christians.

Recalling the tumultuous events surrounding the CAA in 2019-2020, the city experienced nationwide protests, with Jamia Millia Islamia and Shaheen Bagh becoming focal points of dissent. In 2020, northeastern Delhi faced communal unrest related to the CAA, resulting in 53 lives lost and over 500 individuals injured. The recent security measures aim to ensure peace and order in the wake of the CAA rules’ implementation.
