New Delhi: Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has approved the proposal to hold elections for the mayor, deputy mayor and members of the standing committee on February 16. LG Saxena said that ‘As per the recommendation of the Chief Minister of Delhi, I approve the proposal to hold a meeting of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Thursday, February 16, at Dr. SP Mukherjee Civic Center for the election of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and 6 members of the Standing Committee.

Earlier, the Delhi government and the MCD had fixed February 16 as the date of election for the mayor, deputy mayor and members of the standing committee. This proposal was sent to LG of Delhi for final approval.

This proposal was sent by the Municipal Corporation to the Delhi Government, which was accepted by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and sent to Raj Niwas. Now the Lt. Governor has taken the final decision on this. Till now the Lieutenant Governor has been following the proposals suggested by the Delhi Government. There was a proposal of the Delhi government to hold mayoral elections on January 24 and February 6, which was accepted by the LG. Three times the meeting was unsuccessful

It is worth mentioning that in the three meetings held earlier, the election of the mayor of the corporation has not been successful. Not only this, the whole process is being completed in installments in a similar way. From the oath of councilors to the election of mayor, deputy mayor and six members of the standing committee, it has to be done in a single meeting.

The results of the general election of the corporation held on December 4, 2022, came on December 7, 2022. After this, the date of January 6 was fixed for the oath of the councilors and the election of the mayor. As soon as the presiding officer Satya Sharma called the nominated members to take oath, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) protested. Because of which the meeting was adjourned due to uproar. After this, the meeting was adjourned on January and February 6 also due to uproar by the BJP councillors. The Aam Aadmi Party has gone to the Supreme Court regarding this matter, where the hearing is to be held on 13 February.
