Delhi MLA salary hike over 66%: Here’s how much they will get per month

New Delhi: The salaries and allowances of the members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly have been increased by more than 66 percent. Along with this, now the salary allowance of Delhi MLAs (Delhi MLA Salary) has been increased from 54000 to 90 thousand rupees. At the same time, the salaries and allowances of ministers, assembly speaker, deputy speaker, chief whip and leader of the opposition have been increased from the existing Rs 72,000 to Rs 1 lakh 70 thousand per month.

In this regard, on March 9, the Law and Justice and Legislative Affairs Department of Delhi Government issued a notification. Even after this salary increase, the salary of law makers of Delhi is the lowest. This is the first increase in the salary of MLAs in the last 11 years. Significantly, five separate bills were introduced to increase the salaries of ministers, legislators, chief whip, speaker and deputy speaker and leader of the opposition in the assembly, which after passing were sent for the President’s approval. From where after getting the approval, now it has come into force.

As per the official figures, an MLA currently gets Rs 12,000 monthly salary, which has now increased to Rs 30,000 after the salary hike.

At present, the MLAs of Delhi used to get Rs 18,000 constituency allowance per month, which has now been increased to Rs 25,000. Apart from this, the conveyance allowance has been increased from Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,000. At the same time, the secretarial allowance has been increased from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000. In such a situation, now the MLAs will get Rs 90,000 instead of Rs 54,000.

At present, the MLAs of Delhi were getting Rs 8,000 per month as telephone allowance, in which it has been increased by Rs 2,000 to Rs 10,000. Let us tell you that the telephone allowance of MLAs has been increased at a time when a plan of only Rs 700 is running across the country for unlimited calling for three months. In such a situation, instead of reducing the allowance of telephone allowance, it has also been increased by Rs 2000.

Salaries of the Chief Minister, Ministers, Speaker and Deputy Speaker, Chief Whip and Leader of the Opposition have been increased by 300 per cent from the present Rs 20,000 per month to Rs 60,000 per month. Apart from this, constituency allowance has been increased from existing Rs 18,000 to Rs 30,000, hospitality allowance to Rs 10,000 from existing Rs 4,000, secretarial assistance allowance to Rs 25,000 and daily allowance to Rs 1,500 from existing Rs 1,000. In such a situation, now his total salary has gone up to Rs 1 lakh 72 thousand.

While approving the proposal for this pay hike, many members had said that the pay and allowances need to be revised regularly to make them at par with their counterparts in other states. At the same time, some MLAs cited the salary and allowances of MLAs of other states and said that they are the least paid MLAs in the country.

It is worth mentioning that in 2015, the Delhi Assembly had given its approval to form a committee to prepare a proposal for a hike in salary. After this, a bill was passed from the assembly to increase the salary and allowances, but the center sent it back recommending changes.

After this, the Union Home Ministry had given its prior approval to the Delhi government in May 2022 to introduce a legislative proposal in the Delhi Assembly for revision of salaries and allowances of MLAs. After this, the government presented five bills in this regard and sent them to the President for approval, after getting the approval, the Delhi government has now issued its notification.
