Delhi Riots Case 2020: Delhi High Court on Wednesday booked activist Sharjeel Imam granted statutory bail in the sedition and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) case registered against him for allegedly delivering inflammatory speeches in Delhi’s Jamia area and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
A division bench of Justice Suresh Kumar Kait and Justice Manoj Jain passed the order taking into account the fact that he has already served half the sentence for the offenses charged against him. However, Imam will remain in jail as he is also an accused in a larger conspiracy case related to the 2020 Delhi riots.
Sharjeel Imam, who was arrested for giving inflammatory speeches, has got bail after almost four years. In February, a Delhi court sentenced Sharjeel Imam Was refused to grant statutory bail. After this Sharjeel Imam had approached the High Court.
Background of the Sedition Charges
Imam was accused of making provocative speeches that allegedly incited violence during the 2020 Delhi riots. The charges against him included sedition under Section 124A of the Indian Penal Code, among other offenses.
