Delhi Water Crisis: Govt Cracks Down on Wasteful Usage, Imposes Rs 2,000 Fine for Car Washing

Amidst the severe water scarcity in Delhi exacerbated by Haryana’s refusal to release water shares, the Delhi government has taken decisive action to conserve water resources. In response to the acute heatwave and dwindling water supply, the government has issued directives to curb unnecessary water wastage. Notably, a penalty of Rs 2,000 has been imposed for wasteful practices like washing cars with hoses and diverting household water for construction or commercial purposes.

Formation of Monitoring Teams: Delhi Water Minister Atishi has instructed the Delhi Jal Board CEO to assemble 200 teams to monitor and minimize instances of water wastage across the city.

Crackdown on Misuse: These teams will crack down on various forms of water misuse, including car washing with pipes, overflow from water tanks, and unauthorized tapping of domestic water for non-residential activities.

Immediate Deployment: The teams are scheduled to be deployed promptly from 8 am onwards to enforce these regulations effectively.

Atishi’s Call for Action:
Atishi underscored the critical need for water conservation amidst the ongoing crisis. She highlighted the rampant wastage observed in many parts of Delhi, including illegal connections utilized by construction sites and commercial establishments. Urging swift action, she directed the CEO of DJB to implement stringent measures to curb such misuse.

Haryana’s Water Supply Disruption
Atishi has openly criticized Haryana for withholding Delhi’s share of water since May 1, exacerbating the water crisis in the national capital. In light of this, the Delhi government is contemplating approaching the Supreme Court if the situation fails to improve. Atishi also warned of issuing challans to individuals for activities like car washing if the water supply from Yamuna remains disrupted.
