Washington: CNN predicts that Democrats will maintain their slim Senate majority for the next two years, following victories in close contests in Nevada and Arizona. Republicans currently hold 49 Senate seats versus Democrats’ 50.

Joe Biden will get an additional two years to nominate judges for federal courts with his nominees and staffing his administration largely in accordance with his preferences when the Democrats win the last two seats in Nevada and Georgia, which will give them the majority they already hold.

President Biden will greatly benefit from maintaining Senate control for the final two years of his first term in office. It implies that Democrats will have the ability to confirm Biden’s judicial nominees, preventing situations like the one former President Barack Obama faced in 2016, when then-Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to allow a vote on his Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland. Additionally, it means that Senate Democrats can reject bills passed by the House and establish their own agenda, according to CNN.

Meanwhile, Republicans look to be edging closer to a majority in the House of Representatives, which will have significant effects on Joe Biden’s presidency during the following two years.

The Republicans appear to be edging closer to the 218 seats needed to take control of the House, but several congressional races, notably those in California and Colorado, are still uncalled for.

On December 6, Georgia will hold a run-off election because no Senate candidate was able to secure an absolute majority.
