Deputy CM Manish Sisodia moves SC against his arrest by CBI in Delhi liquor ‘scam’

New Delhi: Manish Sisodia has approached the Supreme Court against his arrest in the alleged liquor scam case of Delhi. The Supreme Court is all set to hear Sisodia’s plea soon. The hearing of the case will be held today at 3.30 pm.

Manish Sisodia was arrested by the CBI on Sunday in connection with the alleged scam in the Delhi government’s liquor policy. The CBI produced him in Rouse Avenue Court on Monday. Court has sent Sisodia to 5 days CBI custody.

CBI has started questioning Manish Sisodia. The CBI has prepared a long list of questions for Sisodia. The probe agency is interrogating Sisodia for the first time after his arrest. It is being told that the CBI will conduct a fresh inquiry. They will be asked the questions which they failed to answer during the previous interrogation.

Sisodia was produced in Rouse Avenue Court on Monday. Meanwhile, the CBI had argued in the court that Sisodia was not cooperating in the investigation, so custodial interrogation was needed. The court accepted this and sent Sisodia to CBI remand for 5 days.

On the other hand, after the arrest of Sisodia, the Aam Aadmi Party protested strongly in the whole country including Delhi. The Aam Aadmi Party is alleging that the BJP government is implicating Sisodia, who has done excellent work in the field of education in Delhi, on false charges. At the same time, BJP has called Sisodia a staunch cheater.

The new excise policy was implemented by the Kejriwal government in Delhi on 17 November 2021. The Delhi government had argued to end the mafia rule by bringing a new excise policy. In July 2022, the then Chief Secretary of Delhi submitted a report in this matter to LG VK Saxena. In this, along with disturbances in the excise policy, Deputy CM Manish Sisodia was also accused of giving undue benefits to the liquor traders. On the basis of this report, the CBI had registered the case on 17 August 2022. CBI arrested Sisodia in this case on Sunday.

The CBI had said that a case was registered against the Deputy Chief Minister and In-charge Excise Minister and 14 others to investigate alleged irregularities in the new excise policy. A notice under Section 41-A of the CrPC was issued to the Deputy CM on 19 February 2023 to cooperate in the investigation. However, he asked for a week’s time citing busy schedule. A notice was again issued on his request. However, during this time he gave evasive answers and did not cooperate in the investigation. That is why he has been arrested.
