Diwali ‘Muhurat Trading’ 2023: Key Date, Timings, Significance, and Essential Details

The leading stock exchanges BSE and NSE are set to conduct a special ‘Muhurat Trading’ session on Diwali, marking the commencement of the new Hindu calendar year, Samvat 2080. The term ‘Muhurat’ signifies an auspicious time in the Hindu calendar.

Diwali Muhurat Trading Session 2023: Date and Timings

This year, the special Muhurat trading session is scheduled for Sunday, November 12, from 6 pm to 7.15 pm, inclusive of a 15-minute pre-market session. Trading activities will span various segments, including equity, commodity derivatives, currency derivatives, equity futures & options, and securities lending & borrowing (SLB) during this time. Exchanges will be closed on November 14 for Diwali Balipratipada.

What Happens in Muhurat Trading?
The Muhurat trading session during Diwali involves several phases:

Block Deal Session: Traders commit to buying or selling a security at a predetermined price, which is then reported to the stock exchange.

Pre-Open Session (Call Auction): The stock exchange calculates the opening price based on supply and demand, typically taking around eight minutes.

Main Trading Window: This core phase of Muhurat trading, lasting approximately one hour, sees the execution of the majority of transactions.

Call Auction Session: This part of the session involves trades of securities that are not frequently traded, known as the ‘illiquid’, based on specific criteria outlined by the exchange.

Closing Session: In this stage, traders and investors can place orders at the market’s closing price.

Participating in Muhurat trading is considered auspicious, and the session is designed to bring good fortune and prosperity to market participants.
