DRDO Unveils Indigenous Assault Rifle ‘Ugram’ Designed for Indian Army

The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has recently unveiled its fully indigenous assault rifle named ‘Ugram.’ The development of this rifle, designed to meet the Indian Army’s General Staff Qualitative Requirement (GSQR) of weighing less than four kilograms, has been in progress for the past two to three years.

Collaboration and Features

Developed in collaboration with a private firm at the Armament Research and Development Establishments (ARDE), ‘Ugram’ promises to match international standards of similar calibre weapons. The design phase of the rifle took several years, but with the assistance of Dvipa Armour India Ltd, it was realized in record time. Special emphasis was placed on ensuring reliable functionality with the existing ammunition and ensuring ruggedness through the steel construction of critical components.

Showcasing and Future Trials

Prototypes of the 7.62 x 51mm assault rifle have already been demonstrated to senior Army officials and the Minister of Home Affairs. However, before it reaches field user trials, ‘Ugram’ will undergo stringent evaluations by an independent expert committee.

Official Statements

An official from the project commented, “This weapon is fully indigenous and matches international standards of similar calibre weapons. We’ve ensured reliable functioning with the in-service ammunition and focused on ruggedness and intuitive operations.”

The unveiling of the operational prototype was conducted by Dr. S V Gade, the Director-General of the Armament & Combat Engineering Cluster, in the presence of A Raju, the Director of ARDE.
