Dubai ends its hefty tax on alcohol to promote tourism and business

Maritime and Mercantile International, the two noted alcohol distributors in Dubai, announced the move. Dubai’s other state-linked distributor, African & Eastern, has decreased prices and is ready to remove the sales tax, it said in an Instagram post.

Both liquor companies are jubilant and say eliminating the tax will be a boon for their companies.

The Michelin guide’s recognition of 11 restaurants with at least one star has helped the emirate’s expanding culinary industry. The city does, however, occasionally cost more than neighbouring cities, and hoteliers have pushed for a reduction in levies. Looking at the wine list is where the prices diverge, according to Cordon.

Taxes from the sale of alcohol products were the main source of revenue for the UAE government, and the effects of their reduction may be countered by a 9% federal company tax that will go into effect in June.

Several key sectors, like tourism and real estate, have boosted the economy of the UAE after the COVID pandemic. It is expected that these sectors will make up the shortfall in alcohol income.
