Dumka murder victim a minor; Jharkhand Child Welfare Panel wants action under Pocso

The child protection committee in Jharkhand has now acknowledged that the Dumka girl who was set on fire and later killed was a minor.

Dumka: The child protection committee in Jharkhand has now acknowledged that the Dumka girl who was set on fire and later killed was a minor. She was just 15-year-old and not 19, as had been reported earlier. The Dumka incident shocked the entire nation.

The panel has requested that the charges should come under the Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.

The Dumka Public Relations Office said in a statement, “The Jharkhand Child Welfare Committee advises SP to add sections under the POCSO Act in the matter. The Committee learnt that the deceased was 15 years old and not 19, as the police had stated in the statement that was recorded earlier.

On August 23, a class 12 student was allegedly set on fire by her suspected stalker, identified as Shahrukh. She passed away from her burn wounds in the early hours of Sunday, August 28.

The incident occurred in Dumka town in Jharkhand on Tuesday when the accused, identified as Shahrukh, poured petrol on the girl from outside the window of her room when she was fast asleep and set her ablaze, police said.

The victim, a class 12 student, had been critically burnt and was first admitted to Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital in Dumka in a critical condition. She later shifted to Ranchi, but she succumbed to a burn injury.
