The powerful tremor struck in the wee hours, with its shallow depth exacerbating the impact. Authorities swiftly issued evacuation advisories, especially for coastal areas vulnerable to the predicted tsunami waves, which could reach up to three meters in height. The quake’s force was felt strongly in Taipei, where power outages added to the chaos. The Japan Meteorological Agency said a 30-centimeter tsunami wave was detected off the coast of Yonaguni Island about 15 minutes after the quake struck. Additionally, an evacuation advisory was issued for coastal areas near the southern prefecture of Okinawa shortly after the earthquake triggered the tsunami warning.

In addition to causing major shaking and building collapse, the massive Taiwan earthquake also caused landslides across the island. Visuals from residents have emerged online showing large sections of land slipping due to the earthquake.
