Tokyo: On April 3, 2024, Taiwan was shaken by a devastating 7.5 magnitude earthquake, causing widespread destruction and panic. The earthquake’s epicenter was near the city of Hualien, causing the collapse of many buildings and triggering tsunami warnings, creating fear and uncertainty throughout the region.

Local people have shared multiple videos of the earthquake that are currently doing rounds on social media:

The powerful tremor struck in the wee hours, with its shallow depth exacerbating the impact. Authorities swiftly issued evacuation advisories, especially for coastal areas vulnerable to the predicted tsunami waves, which could reach up to three meters in height. The quake’s force was felt strongly in Taipei, where power outages added to the chaos. Emergency services were mobilized to assess the damage and aid those affected, as the true extent of the devastation began to unfold.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said a 30-centimeter tsunami wave was detected off the coast of Yonaguni Island about 15 minutes after the quake struck. Additionally, an evacuation advisory was issued for coastal areas near the southern prefecture of Okinawa shortly after the earthquake triggered the tsunami warning.

Massive landslide due to strong tremors

In addition to causing major shaking and building collapse, the massive Taiwan earthquake also caused landslides across the island. Visuals from residents have emerged online showing large sections of land slipping due to the earthquake.

Several videos on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) show videos of major landslides which were caused by the 7.5 magnitude earthquake.

As Taiwan grapples with the aftermath of the earthquake, attention has turned to recovery and reconstruction. The resilience of the Taiwanese people was once again tested in the face of natural disasters. While the immediate priority is the safety and well-being of those affected, this incident is a stark reminder of the need for robust disaster response strategies.
