Earthquake of 6.3 magnitude hits Colombian capital

New Delhi: A strong earthquake hits in Colombia's capital Bogota on Thursday. The magnitude reached 6.3 according to the US Geological Survey, prompting frightened residents to flee homes, offices and restaurants.

New Delhi: A strong earthquake hits in Colombia’s capital Bogota on Thursday. The magnitude reached 6.3 according to the US Geological Survey, prompting frightened residents to flee homes, offices and restaurants.

No major damage was reported, but according to the mayor there were “reports of people trapped in elevators and other minor events.” Minutes after the initial quake, another tremor struck, and crowds of people poured into the streets of the city.

Colombia’s National Geological Service estimated the magnitude of the second quake at 5.6, while the next aftershock measured 4.8. The Colombian Geological Survey (CGS) put the quake’s magnitude at 6.1, while the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported it at 6.3.

The Colombian agency said the quake occurred at 12:04 p.m. (1704 GMT), with its epicenter in the town of El Calvario in the center of the country, 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Bogota.

A reporters watched as buildings shook and sirens rang out, as thousands of panicked residents poured into the streets of the capital, clutching their cellphones as they called their loved ones.

The capital’s mayor, Claudia López, said on the X social network, as it was formerly known, that “the only serious incident reported was that a woman threw herself from the 10th floor of a residential building… apparently But due to neurological disorders.” Twitter.
